"Carolyn really hears what I have to say about the pain I feel and does a great job devising a physical therapy program addressing that pain and gives me activities that I can incorporate into my daily life." -Gail Gorenstein
"I've had two separate experiences with Carolyn Adler, both relating to reconstructive surgery. In the first instance, I was referred by another client of hers, so had no background information on whether we would be a 'match' for working together. At our initial session, Carolyn spent considerable time in reviewing my history leading up to the total knee replacement, i.e., what my lifestyle was like, level of activity, length of pain/disability prior to the surgery, etc. She spent time explaining the course of rehabilitation, taking into account my personal goals as well as the goals my physician had for me. During the rehabilitation sessions, Carolyn always checked to see my level of pain/mobility before starting me on exercises, encouraged me to go 'a bit more' and applauded my every, albeit small, success. I found Carolyn to be professional yet personable, finding ways to incorporate my personal lifestyle needs with the important work of rehabilitation. While I sometimes worked with the assistant therapists, Carolyn kept a watchful eye out for my well-being and proper form of exercising. As I progressed, Carolyn supported my decision to finish with our sessions and work independently, with the caveat that I could come back and check-in with her at any time for a refresher or to help with any discomfort/pain/limitation.
In the second instance of surgery, I contacted Carolyn for an evaluation of my pain/discomfort, to see what might be an appropriate course - physical therapy or see a specialist. With her guidance, I chose to try some therapy sessions; however, within a few sessions, Carolyn suggested that we were not making appropriate progress and that perhaps a consult with a specialist was in order. After doing that, it was confirmed I had a more serious problem that would require surgery. Knowing that I could utilize Carolyn's professional expertise during the rehab made the decision much easier, and shortly after surgery I was back at ProActive on a regular basis. Again, Carolyn spent extensive time in the evaluation session, laying out the course of rehabilitation, discussing the limitations I would be experiencing, and the possible levels of pain/stress. At every step of the many weeks that followed, Carolyn took the time to see how my home exercises were progressing, helped me and my husband to devise ways of improving/expanding on those exercises, and then coached both of us to be sure we had the proper procedures. She offered continual support and encouragement throughout the many months of rehabilitation, bolstering my spirits when I was discouraged, and cheering on my every small accomplishment. In addition, the very supportive assistants followed her recommendations precisely, checking with her when there was a question or I was in pain, and they, too, greatly aided in my rehabilitation process.
Carolyn has a unique way of combining professionalism with a supportive personal approach. When I was discouraged, she listened and helped me through it, and when I was elated, she was my biggest cheerleader. During both experiences, Carolyn provided excellent guidance to my husband in helping me with the home exercises, and helped him to construct appropriate home equipment to aid my rehabilitation. My only hesitancy in recommending Carolyn is that her schedule would be too full to accomodate me in the future should I need her services. ProActive is fortunate in having Carolyn on their team! She is a true asset and I feel certain that choosing her as your physical therapist will greatly speed your rehabilitation process." Lynne Brant
